DNO Approval for Solar Panels: G98, G99 and G100 Explained

Marcus Webb· 1 min read

Solar installations connect to the electricity network, so certain systems need to be notified to or approved by the local Distribution Network Operator. The applicable process depends on the installation characteristics.

What is a DNO?

The Distribution Network Operator manages the local electricity distribution network. When generation is connected to that network, the DNO needs appropriate information to ensure the connection is technically suitable.

What is G98?

G98 is associated with notification requirements for certain small-scale generation installations that meet the applicable technical conditions.

What is G99?

G99 applies to generation installations that fall outside the relevant G98 conditions and can involve a more detailed connection application and assessment.

What is G100?

G100 relates to export limitation arrangements where a system controls export to remain within an agreed network limit.

ProcessGeneral purpose
G98Notification for qualifying small-scale generation
G99Connection process for larger or different generation systems
G100Export limitation

DNO requirements should be checked early

Grid requirements can affect system size, equipment and project timescales. They should be considered during design rather than after installation.

Frequently asked questions

What does DNO mean?

DNO means Distribution Network Operator, the organisation responsible for operating the local electricity distribution network.

What is G98 solar?

G98 relates to notification of qualifying small-scale generation installations that meet the applicable technical conditions.

What is G99 solar?

G99 covers generation installations that fall outside the applicable G98 conditions and can require a more detailed connection process.

What is G100?

G100 relates to export limitation arrangements that control electricity exported to the network.
