Solar Panel Electrical Work: What Does a Solar Installer Actually Connect?

Marcus Webb· 1 min read

Solar installation involves both rooftop DC equipment and property-side AC electrical equipment. The electrical design must safely connect the panels to the inverter and then integrate the system with the property's electrical installation.

What is the DC side?

Solar panels generate direct current electricity. DC cabling connects the panels to the inverter, with appropriate routing, connectors, isolation and protection.

What is the AC side?

The inverter converts the solar electricity to alternating current for use within the property. The AC side connects the inverter to the property's electrical system through appropriate protective equipment.

Does the consumer unit need upgrading?

Not always. The installer should assess the existing electrical installation and determine whether additional protection or modifications are required.

Electrical design matters

A solar installation is part of the property's electrical system. The visible panels are only one component of a much larger electrical design.

Frequently asked questions

Does solar installation require electrical work?

Yes. Solar panels connect to an inverter and the property's electrical system, requiring appropriate electrical design, protection and commissioning.

Will my consumer unit need replacing?

Not necessarily. The existing electrical installation should be assessed before deciding whether modifications are required.

What happens to solar electricity after the panels generate it?

The DC electricity travels to the inverter, which converts it to AC electricity for use in the property or export to the grid.
