DNO Approval Explained: G98, G99 and G100 for Solar Installations

James Whitmore· 1 min read

Connecting solar panels or battery storage to the electricity network can involve requirements from your Distribution Network Operator. The applicable process depends on the characteristics of the installation.

What is a DNO?

The Distribution Network Operator manages the local electricity distribution network and sets technical requirements for connecting generation and storage systems.

What is G98?

G98 is associated with certain small-scale generation connections that meet the applicable technical criteria. The installer must confirm whether the proposed system falls within the relevant requirements.

What is G99?

G99 applies to larger or otherwise applicable generation connections where a more detailed connection process may be required.

What is G100?

G100 relates to export limitation arrangements and can be relevant where generation needs to be controlled to remain within an agreed export limit.

StandardGeneral purpose
G98Certain smaller generation connections
G99Applicable larger or more complex generation connections
G100Export limitation arrangements

The installer should determine the correct process

Do not assume a connection standard based only on panel count. The complete electrical system and connection characteristics need to be assessed.

Plan your solar connection correctly

Our design process considers electrical requirements and grid connection requirements before installation.

Frequently asked questions

What is DNO approval for solar?

It is the process of notifying or obtaining approval from the relevant Distribution Network Operator for connecting generation or storage to the electricity network.

What is the difference between G98 and G99?

They relate to different categories of generation connection requirements. The appropriate process depends on the characteristics of the installation.

What is G100?

G100 relates to export limitation systems used to control electricity exported to the network.
