Hybrid Inverters Explained: How They Work and When You Need One

Sarah Kimani· 1 min read

A hybrid inverter combines several energy-management functions within one system. Depending on the model, it can manage electricity from solar panels, a battery and the grid while converting DC electricity into usable AC electricity.

What is a hybrid inverter?

A conventional solar inverter primarily converts electricity generated by solar panels into AC electricity for use in the property or export to the grid. A hybrid inverter can additionally manage battery charging and discharging.

SystemTypical role
Solar inverterConverts solar DC electricity to AC
Battery inverterManages battery energy conversion

Benefits of a hybrid inverter

  • Integrated solar and battery management
  • Potentially simpler system architecture
  • Centralised monitoring
  • Flexible charging strategies
  • Compatibility with selected battery systems
  • Potential support for backup functionality depending on model

Can you add a hybrid inverter to existing solar?

Sometimes. An existing system can potentially be upgraded, but compatibility, electrical configuration, system age and existing inverter specifications need to be assessed.

Does every hybrid inverter provide backup power?

No. Backup capability depends on the inverter, battery, wiring configuration and installation design. Backup should be specifically specified and tested rather than assumed.

Hybrid does not automatically mean better

The inverter should be selected around the complete system design, including panel capacity, battery compatibility, backup requirements and future expansion.

Frequently asked questions

What is a hybrid solar inverter?

A hybrid inverter can manage solar generation and battery storage within one integrated system, depending on the model.

Do I need a hybrid inverter for a battery?

Not always. Some battery systems use separate battery inverters, while others integrate with hybrid inverters.

Can a hybrid inverter provide backup power?

Some can, but backup requires the correct inverter, battery and electrical isolation design.

Can I upgrade my existing solar inverter?

Potentially. Compatibility and the existing electrical design need to be assessed.
